Lecture on  Obama s View of New Relations with the Arab and Islamic World

ECFA arranged a meeting with Dr Yassin El-Ayouti on 5 July 2009 on Obama s view of new relations with the Arab and Islamic world. . The meeting dealt with several aspects of Obama s speech in Cairo on 4 June 2009, focusing on his personality, thought and the main topics addressed in his speech. Following are the highlights of the meeting:

Obama is not only the present leader of the Democratic Party but the maker of a new national movement which is not chauvinistic but realistic.

Obama picked for his administration the best brains that can help the US get out of the impasse that George Bush put it in. The statesmen and thinkers that Obama chose do not belong to one political current. Apart from Democrats there are Republicans. . One of the good things about Obama is that he listens to his aides before taking decisions.

Obama is bringing American institutions back to the world, international law and the UN which the Bush administration had considered itself at loggerheads with.

Obama has a new view of relations between the US and the Arab and Islamic worlds. He said we are not at war with Islam. The Islamic world needs to benefit from his presentation of mutual respect and mutual interests.

Whatever Israel may say about democracy it is an entity that acts against the movement of history and revives colonialist thought at the heart of the Middle East. Yassin el-Ayouty says that if Obama really wants to follow the Cairo speech with deeds not slogans, he needs to adopt measures leading to the independence of the US policy of Israel regarding the Arab and Islamic worlds.

In conclusion, he says that power stems from inside. Egypt is a great nation, hence renaissance from inside is inevitable.
